CRB Check Online Kenya: 3 Ways to Check Your Credit in 2026

Getting a loan in Kenya used to be straightforward. You walked into a bank, filled some forms, and waited. These days, lenders check your CRB record before they even look at your application. Knowing what a CRB check reveals gives you a massive advantage before you apply for anything.

What is a CRB Check?

A CRB check is when a lender, employer, or individual queries your credit file at one of Kenya's three licensed Credit Reference Bureaus. The check pulls your full borrowing history, current credit score, any defaults, and your repayment patterns going back up to five years.

Lenders use this information to decide three things: whether to give you credit, how much to give you, and at what interest rate. The better your CRB record, the better terms you get.

Who Runs CRB Checks in Kenya?

  • Commercial banks (KCB, Equity, Co-op, NCBA, Absa, Standard Chartered) run checks before approving any loan
  • Mobile lenders (Tala, Branch, Zenka) check automatically when you apply in-app
  • SACCOs check before approving development or emergency loans
  • Employers in finance, security, and government increasingly run checks before hiring
  • Landlords in Nairobi and other cities are starting to ask for credit clearance
  • Individuals checking their own records before applying anywhere

3 Ways to Run a CRB Check in Kenya

Option 1: Online via Readiwork (Fastest)

Go to readiwork.co.ke, enter your National ID number, select the check type, pay via M-Pesa (KSh 149), and get your full result in under 60 seconds. You see your credit score, any listings, which lender reported you, and your 12-month history. This is the most complete check available.

Option 2: online channel Code

Dial a CRB Phone/Online check. This costs around KSh 25 but only gives you a basic listed/not-listed result. You won't see your score, who listed you, or how much you owe. Good for a quick check, not for serious loan preparation.

Option 3: Visit a CRB Office

You can walk into a licensed CRB office in Nairobi with your ID. This takes time and isn't necessary when online checks are available and instant.

How Often Should You Check?

At minimum, check your CRB record twice a year. Always check before you apply for any loan, mortgage, or job in a regulated industry. If you've recently paid off a debt, check again 7-10 days later to confirm the lender updated your record.

What if the Check Shows Something Wrong?

Errors happen. A lender might report a default that you actually paid, or list an amount that doesn't match. If you find an error, contact the lender in writing immediately, attach your payment proof, and give them a deadline of 5 business days to update your record. If they don't, escalate to the CRB directly with your evidence. You have legal rights under CBK regulations.
