Finding out you're listed on CRB can feel like a gut punch, especially when you discover it while trying to get a loan you urgently need. But here's the thing: being listed isn't a life sentence. People clear their CRB records every day in Kenya, and the process is more straightforward than most people realise.
First: How Did You End Up on CRB?
Understanding how you got listed helps you fix it faster. In Kenya, you can be listed for:
- Unpaid mobile loans (Tala, Branch, Zenka, Okash, Haraka)
- Fuliza overdraft that wasn't cleared
- M-Shwari or KCB M-Pesa loans not repaid
- Bank loans in default (KCB, Equity, Co-op, NCBA, Absa)
- SACCO loan defaults and microfinance loans
Here's the part that shocks most people: you can be listed for as little as KSh 1. CBK regulations don't set a minimum threshold. That KSh 300 Fuliza balance you forgot about? That can get you listed.
Step 1: Check Your CRB Status and Find Out Who Listed You
Your credit report will tell you which CRB has the listing, which lender reported the default, how much you owe, and when the default was reported. Get your full credit report at Readiwork for KSh 149, it takes under a minute.
Step 2: Contact the Lender and Pay the Outstanding Debt
- Mobile lenders (Tala, Branch, etc.): Open their app, the outstanding balance will be shown, pay directly via M-Pesa
- Bank loans: Visit a branch or call customer care, they'll give you the exact settlement amount including penalties
- Fuliza/M-Shwari: Repay directly on the M-Pesa menu under "Loans and Savings"
- SACCOs/MFIs: Visit their offices or contact them directly
Always request a written settlement letter or receipt after paying. You'll need this if there's any dispute later.
Step 3: Wait for the Lender to Update CRB
Paying the debt doesn't instantly remove you from CRB. The lender has to update the CRB record. By CBK regulations, lenders are required to do this within 5 business days. Most mobile lenders update within 2 - 3 days. Banks can take up to the full 5 days.
Step 4: Recheck Your Status
After 5 - 7 business days, run another CRB check at Readiwork. Your status should now show as clear. If still listed, escalate to the CRB directly.
What if the Lender Hasn't Updated CRB After 10 Days?
You can raise a dispute directly with the CRB. Contact Readiwork or TransUnion with your settlement proof. The CRB is legally required to investigate and resolve disputes within 30 days per CBK regulation.
Can I Get a Loan After Clearing CRB?
Yes, but your credit score doesn't instantly jump to excellent. Mobile lenders like Tala and Branch often reinstate your limit within days to weeks. Banks take longer. As you use credit responsibly over the following 6 - 12 months, your score will improve and loan limits will increase.
The first step is knowing where you stand. Run a full credit check at Readiwork right now, so you know exactly what you're dealing with and can start fixing it today.
